As a result of the recent Integrated Resource Management rounds of public meetings conducted by the NS Department of Natural Resources, many questions about the history of Crown land management in Nova Scotia have been asked. Excerpts from this publication have been collected and posted here, in an effort to provide background information on the IRM debate.

Please note that they are excerpts only, and we recommend that readers aquire the volume and read further, as it contains much information of interest concerning the IRM issue, and the history of Crown land management during the past 100 years.

Selected topics include:
  • The introduction of the Lease Act in 1899.
  • The history of Cape Breton's "Big Lease", and its effect on the establishment of Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
  • The creation of the Department of Lands and Forests
  • The reaquisition of the Big Lease, and its subsequent re-lease to Stora Enso.
  • Insights into the historic relationship between Crown and the major pulp companies.
  • Forest Inventory reassessments.
  • The abandonment of the Small Tree Act, and the move to clearcutting as forest policy.
